CAAN requires carriers to operate international chartered flights from GBIA.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has determined that foreign chartered flights would henceforth depart from the newly constructed Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA) in Bhairahawa. Previously, all foreign chartered flights departed from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

According to CAAN Director General Pradip Adhikari, the country’s independent civil aviation authority resorted to the measure to put the GBIA back into full functioning. The airport was opened on May 16.

However, diplomatic chartered aircraft, cargo airline flights, and Army flights continue to operate at TIA, he said.

Similarly, according to a winter flight schedule that went into effect on October 30, one international flight in every three flights at the TIA will have to be conducted at the GBIA.
Previously, foreign flights began at the GBIA on May 16, of this year.

Previously, the CAAN instructed three international airlines, together with Nepal Airlines Corporation, the national flag carrier, and Himalaya Airlines, to operate one flight each day at the GBIA. At the moment, only Jazeera Airways operates three flights each week from the GBIA.
